Doughnut fans in lawn chairs started lining up early at a bright pink building near Apache Boulevard and Rural Road in Tempe.

The newest location of Oregon-based Voodoo Doughnuts opened its doors to a line stretching down the street on Thursday morning.

The shop is known for its unusual and creative doughnuts in dozens of flavors — with names such as viscous hibiscus and Memphis mafia. In the cases filled with colorful doughnuts at the grand opening, one featured the Arizona State University Sun Devils pitchfork.

This is the first Voodoo Doughnuts location in Arizona. In April, CEO Chris Schultz explained why the Tempe site was chosen.

“Tempe is the melting pot of Arizona with the university being right there and local community growth, we knew it was a place we wanted to be,” Schultz said in an email to KJZZ News.

The company, which started with one small store in Portland about 20 years ago, also operates locations in Colorado, Oregon, Texas and Washington, according to its website.
