James "Jim" Patrick Weiers, former Republican speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, died on Friday at age 70.

His brother, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, released a statement on Friday evening.

"While Jim’s life was more than his service to the state, for those who knew him in this context, I ask that you remember and celebrate Jim’s service to our great state, as well as his exemplary leadership as the former speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives," Jerry Weiers said.

Jim Weiers was born in South Dakota in 1953 and moved to Phoenix in 1965. He was elected to the Arizona House in 1994 in District 10 and was a member of the Legislature until 2013. He served two stints as speaker of the House during his tenure.

He is survived by his wife, Gina, four kids, 12 grandchildren, his stepmother, JoAnne Weiers, and four sisters.
