Phoenix plans to convert recycled sewage into potable water by 2028
Phoenix is activating a treatment plant where recycled sewage will be converted not only to graywater for irrigation, but also to drinking water.
The pilot project is the latest attempt to stretch resources in the face of historic drought.
Like many other Arizona cities, Phoenix activated its Drought Management Plan in 2022, as the state’s allotment of the Colorado River was being cut.
Nazario Prieto, with the city’s water services department, says the use of treated wastewater is in line with the city’s long-standing efforts to maximize efficiency – and the public has no reason for concern.
“This is the cleanest water that any utility can provide, right? It goes through so much treatment that when it comes out, it will be the best quality water that we will be providing in Phoenix," Prieto said.
Under the $300 million pilot project, the city will begin converting recycled sewage into potable water by 2028.
