Phoenix relatively unscathed by remnants of Tropical Storm Hilary
While Southern California has been inundated with rain, the Phoenix area has been relatively unscathed from Tropical Storm Hilary.
Isaac Smith with the National Weather Service in Phoenix says we were mostly left high and dry by the storm over the weekend.
"So really not much out of this system at all. We just ended up picking up more wind than anything. So we were seeing some gusts up to 40 miles per hour yesterday afternoon and evening," said Smith.
Smith says that Sky Harbor Airport recorded only a few hundredths of an inch of rain and that most of the rainfall has been concentrated in mountainous regions and in western Arizona.
"The winds were particularly strong out across southwest Arizona, in Yuma in particular, where they saw gusts upwards of nearly 75 miles per hour," said Smith.
The National Hurricane Center said only vestiges of a weakened system was moving over the Rocky Mountains. The National Weather Service forecast shows chances of rain both Wednesday and Thursday.
Highs on Monday were only in the 90s. The Phoenix metro area is expected to return to triple digits by Tuesday and could hit 110 degrees by the weekend.
Hilary first made landfall as a hurricane in Mexico’s arid Baja California Peninsula on Sunday before becoming the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years.
