The inmate convicted of killing Maricopa County detention Officer Gene Lee has been sentenced to 33 years in prison.

Daniel Davitt was in county jail, having been convicted of multiple sex crimes, when he attacked Lee in October 2019.

The 64-year-old Lee was driven to the floor, fatally striking his head. He had worked for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for six years.

Davitt was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder, but a jury trial resulted only in a manslaughter conviction.

“Officer Gene Lee was a public servant who devoted his life to protecting our community. It is a travesty for his life to have ended in this way, and I can only imagine the depths of the sorrow his family is experiencing," Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a press release Friday. "I am grateful to the judge for imposing a lengthy sentence, and am grateful to the people in my office who worked relentlessly to bring his attacker to justice.”
